IPOH, April 3 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is offering 3,000 new helmets that meet the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) specifications in exchange for old ones, free of charge, in conjunction with the Perak MADANI Rakyat (PMR) 2026 Programme, which begins today.
Assistant Enforcement Officer (Road Safety Division) at the JPJ Putrajaya headquarters, Shamima VPK Abdulla, said 1,000 helmets are allocated daily over the three-day programme.
She said the initiative aims to enhance road safety awareness among motorcyclists.
“The registration process is conducted at eight counters to ensure smooth and efficient service for members of the public,” she said when met at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah, Meru Raya, today.
Shamima said applicants must be Malaysian citizens and are eligible to exchange only one helmet each by presenting their original identity card during registration.
Participants are also required to bring along old helmets that are damaged or do not meet safety standards, such as half-shell or ‘turtle’ helmets, for surrender before receiving a new, safer unit.
“They must bring their helmets, register, and hand them over to us before being given a new helmet that complies with SIRIM standards,” she said.
Before registration, visitors are required to attend a brief “pocket talk” session lasting five to 10 minutes on road safety advocacy to emphasise the importance of using certified helmets.
To manage crowd flow, JPJ is implementing a coupon system throughout the programme.
As of 4 pm today, a total of 527 helmets had been distributed, with remaining units from the first day to be carried forward in anticipation of a higher turnout over the weekend.
Shamima added that JPJ is also conducting a survey via QR code to gather public feedback on the programme, aimed at improving future initiatives and services.
The helmet exchange programme is among the key activities held during the Perak PMR 2026, which runs from 9 am to 5 pm daily over three days, with a break from noon to 2 pm.
