Global Energy Crisis: Free Breakfast At 873 Selangor Schools To Ease Parents' Burden - MB

SHAH ALAM, April 16 (Bernama) -- The Selangor State Government through 12 Local Authorities (PBTs) will provide free breakfast to students in all 873 schools to ease parents' expenses following the global energy crisis.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the assistance through the Selangor resilience strengthening package will be distributed starting this August.

"Every day, one school in each PBT will be distributed this assistance...we will rotate schools and it will be implemented for all levels.

"We will implement it because we will allocate one PBT RM1 million for now for a period of several months, let's say in the first three months and we will extend if it has a positive impact on the community.

"I also want to ensure that the quality of the food is good, protein-rich or nutritious so as not to disrupt their growth," he said at a special press conference on the Selangor State Government's Preparedness Strategy to Face the West Asian Crisis at Wisma Dewan Negeri Selangor today.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said that through the same package, the state government will allocate RM25 million to cover the cost of fuel or agricultural inputs, as support for rice farmers, fishermen, farmers, and breeders who are affected by the high price of fuel such as diesel.

“For example, 18,000 rice farmers will be given RM500 for each hectare of land cultivated for one crop season, while 2,000 fishermen will be given RM300 assistance per month for a period of six months so that the cost of increasing diesel does not have a too severe impact on them.

“Similarly for farmers, breeders and aquaculture entrepreneurs, RM450 will be channeled every month for a period of six months so that agricultural inputs can continue to be accommodated and do not have an impact that will increase the price of goods,” he said.

Earlier, Amirudin said the state government would launch the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package this June which includes several immediate and medium-term measures to help the people and industry face the global energy crisis involving an allocation of RM130.42 million.

Asked about where the allocation was obtained, Amirudin said it was a state allocation that we rearranged from the 2026 budget allocation which we rearranged according to needs.

“For example, we have saved close to RM1 million because we did not implement open houses and we have limited some movements to abroad.

“Yesterday there were several savings measures that were actually approved by the Selangor State Economic Action Council and also the State Executive Council which will save almost RM200 million from the entire 2026 budget and we believe we can fully implement these aids with RM130 million being implemented now,” he said.
