EU Population To Shrink By 53mln By 2100 – Statistics

MOSCOW, April 16 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The European Union’s population is projected to decline by 11.7 per cent, or 53 million people, by 2100, the EU statistics agency Eurostat said on Thursday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

In 2025, the EU population was estimated at 451.8 million. Population growth resumed in 2022 following a decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

According to the forecast, the population will continue to grow over the next three years, peaking at 453.3 million in 2029, before gradually declining to 398.8 million by 2100.

Between 2025 and 2100, the share of children, young people, and the working-age population in the EU is expected to decrease.

The share of children and youths will decline from 20 per cent to 17 per cent, while the share of the working-age population (aged 20–64) will fall from 58 per cent to 50 per cent.

By contrast, the share of older age groups (65 years and over) is expected to increase.

The share of the population aged 65–79 is projected to rise from 16 per cent in 2025 to 17 per cent in 2100, while the share of those aged 80 and over is forecast to rise by 10 percentage points, from six per cent to 16 per cent.

The EU population pyramid for 2025 shows a society with high life expectancy, low mortality, and low fertility.

The majority of the population consists of working-age people over 50, while the share of young people under 20 is significantly smaller.

By 2100, the population pyramid shows a shift towards a shrinking population: the share of older age groups is expected to increase, while the share of young people and the working-age population is set to decrease.
