SUKMA 2026 Crucial For Athletes’ Preparation For 2027 SEA Games

KUCHING, April 27 (Bernama) -- The organisation of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) is crucial as a platform to prepare national athletes for the 2027 SEA Games, said Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufik Johari.

He said that although SUKMA 2026, scheduled to take place from Aug 15 to 24, will be conducted prudently, it will not affect the number of sports contested.

“Any discussions with Tuanku (Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah) this Wednesday, as well as the Supreme Committee meeting next Thursday, will be updated from time to time,” he told reporters after attending the Sarawak-level Kembara Inspirasi Belia Akar Umbi (KIBAR) Programme here today.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) announced that the organisation of SUKMA 2026 by Selangor will proceed after receiving the consent of the Selangor Ruler.

According to KBS, the Sultan granted his consent after an audience with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said preparations of sports facilities for the 2027 SEA Games in the state are progressing smoothly despite challenges.

He said several issues had been raised by contractors, particularly regarding rising construction material costs, but these matters are being reviewed in detail.

“We will assess them one by one, but this will not affect the opening ceremony or all sporting events to be held in Sarawak. The increase in costs is unavoidable due to rising material prices, but any additional allocation will be brought to the Cabinet for approval,” he said.

He stressed that there are no delays in the implementation schedule, with close monitoring continuing, including work at project sites carried out until night to ensure all facilities are completed on time.
