SUKAU, May 6 (Bernama) -- Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has underscored the urgent need for closer coordination between agencies to ensure the Sabah Pan Borneo Highway project remains on track and further delays are avoided.
He said this after visiting the Pan Borneo Highway WP25 work package site for a progress briefing while en route from Sandakan to Lahad Datu, in conjunction with his security survey of the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone).
Hajiji said during the Public Works Department (JKR) briefing, he was informed of the status of the WP25 project, which involves a 14.96-kilometre stretch from Kampung Perpaduan Datuk Moh to Sukau.
"The physical progress of the project is recorded at around 12.35 per cent compared to the original schedule target of 15.30 per cent, while financial progress has reached 11.52 per cent. The RM269.9 million project is scheduled for completion within 36 months, by February 2028.
"Key construction components include a multi-storey interchange (flyover), bus stops, and pedestrian bridges, as well as drainage systems and culverts to enhance the safety and comfort of road users," he said.
Hajiji said several major constraints at the site have affected work progress, including issues related to utility relocation, land acquisition, and the demolition of existing structures.
"Utility problems have been identified as one of the primary factors slowing down earthworks, alongside logistical challenges and temporary access issues within the project area," he said.
In this regard, Hajiji emphasised the importance of effective coordination among all agencies involved to address site issues, including expediting land acquisition and utility relocation processes to avoid jeopardising the project's implementation timeline.
He said the Sabah Pan Borneo Highway Project Phase 1B is among the government’s strategic initiatives to strengthen the road infrastructure network, thereby boosting economic growth and connecting key areas on Sabah’s East Coast.
"The state government is committed to ensuring every development project is implemented in an organised manner, closely monitored, and completed on schedule for the benefit of the people," he said.
