SINGAPORE, May 14 (Bernama) -- The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is exploring the use of a jet-propelled manpack that allows officers to board vessels swiftly and safely, along with a weaponised unmanned system for special operations in its territories.
Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam said, as a significant maritime centre, Singapore has been preparing and training for hostage taking and other situations involving ships and hostile vessels.
"Today, SPF showed me a very impressive demonstration – the jet manpack that our operators will use for boarding.
"Essentially, the person flies like what you see in the movies, he flies from the launch place onto the vessel that is a target, carrying his weapons," he said after visiting the Police Coast Guard (PCG) at Brani Base on Thursday.
SPF said during the visit, the minister was introduced to a range of ops-tech capabilities spanning robotics and unmanned systems across the land, air, and sea domains.
According to Shanmugam, the police have been trialling the systems and carefully assessing situations where they can be implemented.
