Kampung Gok Kapur Fire: Kelantan To Study Relocation Proposal For Victims - MB

KOTA BHARU, June 9 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan state government will study a proposal to relocate victims of the Kampung Gok Kapur fire after discovering several had built their homes on rented land.

Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said the matter requires a comprehensive review before any decision to ensure the long-term welfare of all affected families is addressed.

"We will hold further discussions about a new housing site because some victims built their houses on rented land, not their own.

"For now, the victims are being temporarily housed at a village surau that was spared by the blaze, while others are staying at Masjid Banggol or with relatives," he told reporters after checking the scene here today.

Mohd Nassuruddin added he had distributed initial financial aid from the Tabung Serambi Mekah to each affected head of household.

In addition, the victims received welfare assistance from the Kelantan State Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Foundation and the Charity and Welfare Association of Kelantan Elected Representatives' Wives (Purnama).

The Menteri Besar also expressed his appreciation to the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), other emergency services, and volunteers for their swift response, which prevented the fire from spreading further.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the police are awaiting the fire department's full forensic report to determine whether any criminal elements were involved, adding that appropriate action would be taken if necessary.

Yesterday, 27 houses were completely destroyed in an afternoon blaze at Kampung Gok Kapur, leaving dozens of residents homeless. The fire department's forensic team is still investigating the cause of the fire.
