KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- National track cycling star Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang believes that any issues involving national cycling team head coach John Beasley should be resolved through amicable discussions without affecting athletes' preparations for major sporting events.
Mohd Azizulhasni said that if there are parties who feel the time has come for a change in the coaching leadership, the matter can be discussed professionally without creating a prolonged controversy.
"If it is true that all of you do not like him and feel it is time for him to be replaced, that is actually not a problem. Call for a proper discussion and part ways amicably.
"He himself does not mind and believes that one day the time will come. But handling it in this manner is very bad and not good for all of us. It's like 'habis madu sepah dibuang' (using someone as a stepping stone)," he said in a social media post today.
Mohd Azizulhasni said the issue should not distract athletes who are currently preparing for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
He said Beasley had repeatedly advised him in the past not to be drawn into any controversy and instead focus fully on preparations for both Games.
Mohd Azizulhasni also described Beasley as a person with a strong reputation in cycling, not only as a coach but also for his willingness to help many people throughout his service with the national squad.
He said that if the services of the Australian-born coach were no longer required, the transition process should be carried out in an orderly and respectful manner in recognition of his contributions to the development of cycling in the country.
"I am also somewhat disappointed that not many have come forward to show solidarity with Beasley during what is a very difficult time for him.
"There is no need to rise up against the army from the opposing camp, but sincere solidarity from one's own heart would be enough," he said.
The media previously reported that Beasley is expected to leave his post earlier than planned at the end of this year, although his contract only expires on Jan 31 next year, following growing frustration over several internal issues within Malaysian cycling.
