GUA MUSANG, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- Nestled at the foot of a limestone hill on the outskirts of Gua Musang, the Sri Subramanyaswamy Temple continues to draw Hindu devotees, including those from overseas, to gather and celebrate Deepavali.
Built in 2008, the temple is not only a popular destination for the local Indian community but also attracts devotees from Nepal, India, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Bangladesh, as well as foreign workers employed in the plantation sector in the district.
Sri Subramanyaswamy Temple secretary N. Darnam, 53, said this year's Deepavali celebrations were lively, with more than 100 visitors, including those from Selangor and Johor.
“The visitors are not only from Gua Musang and among foreign workers employed on plantations, but some also come from overseas specifically to add to the festive atmosphere on the outskirts of this town.
“The uniqueness of this temple lies in its location at the foot of a limestone hill, which is also one of its attractions,” she told reporters here today.
Visitor P. Jegan, 37, said he had returned from Kajang, Selangor, two days early to continue his family's tradition of celebrating Deepavali at the temple.
He said the celebrations in his hometown were more meaningful as they allowed him to gather with family members and the local community despite working far from Gua Musang.
“Every year, I return to my hometown to celebrate Deepavali with my family. This tradition has been practised by my late father for a long time, and I want to continue it.
“This year, we prepared two sets of clothes and spent about RM500 on festive preparations. Tomorrow, we will celebrate in Kota Bharu with my wife's family,” he said.
Meanwhile, T. Shahtishwaran, 28, said visiting the temple as early as 9 am was an important occasion for his family to gather with relatives, friends and the Indian community in Gua Musang.
He said the celebrations also continued with visits to relatives and friends' homes, as well as the giving of festive money among family members.
