22/09/2022 09:16 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The National men’s hockey squad are scheduled to play four top level friendly matches agianst the national teams of Belgium and France during their Belgium tour series from next Tuesday to Oct 6.

The 22-member ‘Speedy Tigers’ will be based in Brussels for two weeks as part of the team’s preparations for the 2023 World Cup in Bhubaneswar – Rourkela, India, scheduled from Jan 13 to 29, 2023.

The friendly series will not feature striker Faizal Saari who is currently playing for ZSV Schaerweijde hockey club in Belgium’s top league and Mohamad Ashran Hamsani who is undergoing rehabilitation process.

Head coach A. Arul Selvaraj said the tour series was important for the squad to test the level of competitive edge of the team when playing high intensity matches against world class opposition, after undergoing 10 weeks of physical training.

“Among the main focus during the friendly series is also to enhance the team’s coordination, team work and capabilities as well as prepare for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2022 which is scheduled from Nov 1 to 10.

“We are facing one of the best teams in the world…Belgium is currently ranked number two in the world while France are in 11th spot. I am certain that the friendly series will test the players to the limit in terms of fitness, skills and decision making on the field,” he said in a statement through the Malaysian Hockey Confederation, today.

Arul Selvaraj said the series would also be a platform for players like Mohd Zaimi Mat Deris, Muhammad Aminuddin Mohd Zain, Muhamad Ramadan Rosli and Syarman Mat Tee who have not played high intensity matches this year.
