BRYAN ENDURES FEVER TO CLINCH GOLD IN AUG 2024

SURABAYA, June 28 (Bernama) -- National male swimmer Bryan Leong Xin Ren is elated to garner the men's 100 metres (m) butterfly event at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024 despite suffering from a high fever for the past few days.

The 21-year-old athlete said he did not expect another golden finish in today's action and he just wanted to focus on finishing the race because he admitted that he was not at his best due to the fever.

"I am not at the best level because I have a fever, now I am still sick, dizzy, I just think of finishing the race, the timing is not the best but I am happy to deliver gold for Malaysia.

"Last night, I tried to drink a lot of water, and get enough rest, I still feel sick but the team asked me to do my best so I tried my best," he told reporters after the race at the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) swimming pool here today this.

Earlier, Bryan clocked 54.22 seconds (s) in the final to grab the gold while Singaporean swimmer Ong Jung Yi (54.93s) and host swimmer Joe Aditya Wijaya Kurniawan (55.16s) took the silver and bronze medals respectively.

He is also aiming to win another gold medal in the men's 4x100m freestyle event which will take place tomorrow.

In addition to Bryan, Malaysia also won a gold medal through Hii Puong Wei in the men's 200m breaststroke event with a time of 2:20.08s ahead of Thai swimmer Janruksa Thanoichai (21:21.5s) and host challenger Andi Muhammad Nurrizka Febrianto (2:21.34s) who won silver and bronze.
