KUCHING, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government will offer incentives to athletes who win medals at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024, scheduled to take place in the state from Aug 17 to 24.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg indicated that the details of these incentives will be announced after a state Cabinet meeting, hinting that the incentives will be more attractive.
“I do not want to mention it now, we will do it later…if not equivalent maybe better (referring to incentives announced by other states).
“We hope Sarawak athletes can give their best, become champions, and win the most gold medals,” he said after the flag handing over ceremony to the Sarawak SUKMA contingent here today.
Abang Johari added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of SUKMA 2024, which will be held at Sarawak Stadium on Aug 24.
“The organisation of SUKMA 2024 serves as preparation for Sarawak potentially co-hosting the SEA Games in 2027. We are willing to be a co-host to manage this international-level sports event,” he said.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was reported as saying that the estimated total cost of organising the SEA Games is RM700 million, with several state governments already expressing willingness to collaborate, including Sarawak, which has agreed to allocate RM350 million.
