Melaka To Skip Volleyball, Netball In SUKMA

08/08/2024 03:11 PM

MELAKA, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- Melaka will not be sending athletes for two sports, volleyball and netball, at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 in Sarawak, scheduled to take place from Aug 17 to 24.

State Youth Development, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman VP Shanmugam said the decision was made because both sports were not medal prospects and also due to internal technical issues facing the teams.

He said this would also save costs as it is expensive to send teams for the biennial games.

"For example, our volleyball team is facing unresolved internal issues because the coach has been suspended.

"There are also teams we are not sending to SUKMA because they have not finished among the top six in any championships ... there is no 'return of investment' for the state government in terms of medals," he told reporters here today.

Shanmugam said Melaka, who is sending 441 athletes and 176 officials, is targeting 20 golds in 34 sports events.
