ASTAF Moots Introducing Asian Sepaktakraw League

28/10/2024 07:11 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- The Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASTAF) has suggested to introduce an Asian Sepaktakraw League (ASL) in the future to promote the sport.

Its president, Datuk Abdul Halim Kader said the league would use a format that focuses on competition between clubs in Asia in the long-term.

"The ASL is a new branding which only exists in our thinking (together with Persatuan Sepaktakraw Malaysia-PSM). We are studying it in detail on how to expand it in an organised way maybe for a period of eight to 10 years.

"The International Sepaktakraw Federation’s (ISTAF) Super Series has taken place for five years successfully followed by the Sepaktakraw League (STL), but to ensure that sepaktakraw continues, we need to do branding,” he said at a media conference here today, adding that if plans do take off, they are ready to expand the league to other countries in the region.

Meanwhile, PSM president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan said a decision reached together with the ASTAF was that Malaysia needed to host the initial Asian Sepak Takraw Cup, scheduled for May 10 to 18 next year at Titiwangsa Stadium, with four categories, team, regu, doubles and quadrant.

The championship will be a testing ground and serve as a warm up for countries participating in the 2025 South East Asian (SEA) Games in Bangkok, Thailand, from Dec 7 to 19 next year.
