ARAU, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has launched the High-Performance Sports Project (PSPT) to strengthen the development of world-class athletes and ensure consistent success on the international stage, enhancing the university’s global reputation.

UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli said the initiative is a comprehensive effort focusing on elements such as systematic talent identification, monitoring of sports activities, student withdrawal management from courses and the accreditation of highly qualified coaches.

“We are confident this comprehensive approach will establish PSPT as a premier platform for producing world-class sports champions who will not only bring glory to UniMAP on the international stage but also become the pride of the nation,” he said in a statement today.

Zaliman announced that former national sprinter Nazmizan Muhammad, now a senior lecturer at UniMAP’s Faculty of Business and Communication, has been appointed PSPT chairman.

He said PSPT will focus on 11 strategic sports disciplines: athletics, karate, taekwondo, silat, lawn bowls, petanque, woodball, teqball, tennis, weightlifting and cycling, all chosen for their potential to achieve success at national and international levels.

“Nazmizan is expected to play a key role in driving PSPT to new heights, leveraging his extensive experience in sports along with the support of highly skilled coaches,” he said.

Zaliman said the launch of PSPT reflects UniMAP’s commitment to excelling academically and in sports, in line with the university’s vision of nurturing holistic and globally competitive individuals.
