Restructuring M-League A Top Priority For Mohd Joehari

15/02/2025 06:09 PM

SUBANG JAYA, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- Restructuring the Malaysia League (M-League) competition is a priority for Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub in the first phase of his administration as the new president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

Mohd Joehari said that the initiative, in collaboration with the Malaysian Football League (MFL), is an effort to restore the appeal of local league competitions, which have lost some of their charm.

"This plan has always been in place, and soon, I will review the match structure and the league, as well as strengthen any other areas that can be improved.

"We already know that the condition of M-League is not very healthy, so one of the main plans, in collaboration with MFL, is to improve the league," he said at a press conference at the FAM election congress for the 2025-2029 term here today.

He added that other matters, including salary arrears, would also be addressed in consultation with the national league operators.

The M-League was said to be losing its shine due to problems such as a lack of spectators at matches and an irregular league schedule.

Earlier, Mohd Joehari was announced as the new FAM president, replacing Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin, who chose not to seek re-election after holding the position since 2018.

The vice-president of the national football governing body was confirmed as the unopposed winner after being the sole candidate, as announced by FAM Election Committee chairman Prof Datuk Dr Abdullah Mohamad Said during the election.

Mohd Joehari is also optimistic about the new leadership team at FAM, which includes football legends Datuk Dollah Salleh and Datuk Zainal Abidin Hassan, who he sees as the perfect combination to elevate the country’s football to greater heights.
