KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The national rugby sevens (7s) squad emerged as champions of the 2026 South East Asia Sevens (SEA 7s) tournament after defeating Thailand 10-5 in the final at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium today.
National 7s head coach, Nik Safuan Ismade Nik Man, said his charges deserve high praise for the commitment and determination shown during both the matches and the preparation phase for the tournament.
"Despite the short preparation period, the commitment shown by the players was very encouraging, and they have demonstrated the true potential of the national 7s rugby team," he told reporters via a video recording shared today.
Malaysia advanced to the final as Group B champions after thrashing Cambodia 66-0, followed by a 57-7 victory over Brunei and a dominant 38-0 win against Singapore yesterday.
Meanwhile, the national women's rugby squad had to settle for second place after losing 0-41 to Thailand in their final match of the tournament.
