Malaysia Athletics Seeks Quick Fix For FTAA Affiliation Issue

28/04/2026 08:35 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Athletics (MA) is hoping for a swift resolution to the affiliation status of the Federal Territory Athletics Association (FTAA) to enable the body to be officially parked under the national parent organisation.

MA secretary-general Nurhayati Karim said the governing body is deeply concerned about the development of athletics in the country, particularly in the Federal Territories, as preparations for the upcoming SEA Games intensify.

“It is MA's aspiration to have them as part of the national athletics family as soon as possible.

“However, we have to wait for the next feedback following the process involving the Sports Commissioner’s (PJS) office,” she said.

She spoke to reporters after a meeting with representatives from the Labuan and Kuala Lumpur athletics associations here today.

Commenting on the meeting, Nur Haryati said that while discussions were positive, no final decision could be reached today.

She said this was due to several queries raised by committee members, which required further clarification from the Sports Commissioner.

Under the MA Constitution, the formation of the FTAA must comprise legitimate representation from Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya.

The merger process is also subject to due diligence by the MA Council to ensure it aligns with the association’s governance procedures.
