KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Bernama) -- Discus thrower Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin and para track cyclist Mohamad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin have each been selected as recipients of the Special Award at the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100PLUS Awards 2025.

SAM vice-president and chairman of the SAM-100PLUS Awards 2025 organising committee, Mohd Hazreen Nor Mubarak, said the achievements of both athletes did not come overnight and required sacrifices beyond training on the field.

“SAM hopes this recognition will further ignite the spirit not only of Muhammad Irfan and Mohamad Yusof but also of new gems in the national sports arena. Success requires sacrifice and patience to realise,” he said in a statement today.

Muhammad Irfan continued to prove his dominance in the discus event after winning the gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand while setting a new Games record.

The achievement further strengthened the Negeri Sembilan-born athlete’s status as a Southeast Asian champion after securing his seventh consecutive gold medal since beginning his dominance in the event at the 2013 edition in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Yusof created history after becoming the country’s first para athlete to don the Rainbow Jersey following his gold medal victory in the MC1 200-metre flying sprint event at the 2025 Para Track Cycling World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

At the same time, Allianz Malaysia Berhad, through the organisation of the Allianz Junior Badminton Championship (AJBC), was also selected as a recipient of the SAM-100PLUS Awards 2025 Special Award for the company’s contribution in strengthening badminton development in the country.

The SAM-100PLUS Awards 2025, scheduled to take place here on Wednesday, will be officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari.

Also featured at the SAM-100PLUS Awards 2025 are the Best Athlete Award, Best Para Athlete Award and Dynamic Sports Association Award.

Besides recognising athletes who excelled and brought glory to Malaysia throughout 2025, sports journalists will also be celebrated at the event with opportunities to win cash prizes totalling over RM65,000.

The awards are divided into six categories, namely Best News Report (Print Media), Best News Report (Electronic Media), Best News Commentary (Print Media), Best News Commentary (Electronic Media), Best Special Report (Open), Best Sports Photography and Popular Sports Commentator Award.
