JAKARTA, July 4 (Bernama) -- Indonesia’s Election Organisation Ethics Council (DKPP) has permanently removed Hasyim Asy’ari from his position as Chairman of the General Election Commission (KPU), citing breaches of professional ethics.

The decision was delivered by Chairman Heddy Lugito during a hearing at the DKPP Office on Wednesday, where he declared, “to impose the penalty of permanent dismissal on the defendant Hasyim Asy’ari effective from the reading of this decision”.

The Council’s verdict found Hasyim guilty of disregarding principles of professionalism and failing to uphold standards of proportionality and ethics.

Heddy clarified during the proceedings that Hasyim faced accusations from a woman identified as CAT, who serves as a member of the KPU’s Overseas Election Committee in The Hague, Netherlands.

CAT accused Hasyim of favouring personal interests and giving her special treatment, alongside claims of him abusing his authority to pursue a personal relationship with her.

A member of the Council, Muhammad Tio Aliansyah stated, “The defendant has been found to have failed to maintain a balance between personal interests and public duties, mixing personal desires with official responsibilities.”

The DKPP has requested President Joko Widodo to follow up on this decision within seven days from its announcement.

Local media reported that Hasyim thanked the DKPP during a short press conference at the KPU Building, expressing relief at being released from his duties as a member of the election commission.

Speaking at the DKPP Office, CAT, who travelled from the Netherlands to Jakarta to attend the hearing in person, expressed her utmost appreciation to the DKPP for their courageous and fair decision in her case.

“I’ve experienced significant ups and downs from the beginning until now, where I sometimes felt confused, but I was accompanied by a very competent legal team. So, we have reached the outcome that has been determined today,” she said.
