EXTREME HEAT KILLS 5 IN ITALY: REPORTS

15/07/2024 08:55 PM

MOSCOW, July 15 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- The death toll from a heatwave brought by the Charon anticyclone, which hit the Apennines last week, has reached five, reported Sputnik, citing the Il Mattino daily.

The majority of deaths happened on the beaches of the southern Italian region of Apulia. One person collapsed in the street outside of Rome. All the deceased were aged between 68 and 80.

The Health Ministry announced the highest level of weather emergency in 11 out of the 27 biggest cities over the weekend. The extreme heat of over 100°F is expected to persist across the Apennines for the rest of the week, with Thursday and Friday expected to be the hottest.

The UN's World Meteorological Organisation forecasts global temperatures to reach record highs over the next five years, exacerbated by greenhouse gases and the change in ocean currents from La Nina to El Nino events, which began last summer.
