FRANCE'S MOUNTING BUDGET DEBT LEAVES NO ROOM FOR SPENDING: CHIEF AUDITOR

15/07/2024 09:07 PM

MOSCOW, July 15 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- France has lost the leeway in the budget to finance education, security and the green transition after allowing its debt to balloon to €3.1 trillion (US$3.4 trillion), the chief auditor said on Monday, reported Sputnik.

"We are already paying €52 billion for its reimbursement. We will pay €80 billion for its reimbursement in 2027. This means that there is no more room for manoeuvre to pay for education, justice, security and the ecological transition," Pierre Moscovici told France Inter radio.

Moscovici, who heads the National Court of Audit, said the next government would inherit the debt load and would need to get the borrowing under control. The debt is expected to grow to €3.6 trillion by 2027.
