KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul represented Malaysia at the swearing-in ceremony of the new Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, at the Iranian Parliament in Tehran on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s office, Johari is currently on an official visit to Tehran and attending the swearing-in ceremony was part of his programme.

Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony as the president of Iran took place in the presence of the Chief Justice of Iran's Supreme Court, members of the Guardian Council and the head of Iran's Judiciary.

The statement said Johari also paid a courtesy call on his counterpart, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, at the Iranian Parliament to discuss strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation.

"The meeting between the two marked a significant step towards expanding bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for cooperation in various fields," the statement added.

According to the statement, Johari had expressed his desire to expand the cooperation between Malaysia and Iran in various fields, to become an important contributor to regional trade through the strengthening of the logistics sector and supply chain infrastructure.

At the meeting, Johari said ASEAN, which consists of a population of 680 million people, with 61 per cent of them under the age of 35 and being digital technology users, is able to open up access to a large consumer market for Iran.

"ASEAN is also currently on a high-potential path to becoming a major world economy by 2030 through its demographic strength as well as its innovation efforts focused on achieving sustainable development, increasing trade, and talent exchanges across the region," he said.

According to the statement, Ghalibaf, in the meeting, expressed hope that the parliaments of Iran and Malaysia will continue to develop their friendship and cooperation, established since 1970.

Ghalibaf had expressed his readiness to achieve that goal for mutual benefit, especially in logistics, trade and economic connectivity.
