Olympics: Big Waves Slow Down Paris Olympic Surfing Competitions

TAHITI, July 30  (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Increased weather and wave conditions on Monday allowed the world's best surfers to put on a show at the Paris Olympic Games before halting the competition for a temporary break, Xinhua news agency reported.

The field for men was narrowed down to the last eight, as the three-metre wave unleashed some of the best performances in the competition so far.

Brazil's Gabriel Medina set a new record for the highest single wave score in Olympic history at 9.90, while home favourite Joan Duru lodged the highest heat total, 18.13.

"It's super dangerous out there. When the waves are hollow like this, it's super shallow. There are some solid waves out there, but we love it," said Medina after he made his Olympic revenge against Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi of Japan.

The two US surfers were wiped out from the race with John John Florence losing to the Australian rival Jack Robinson, and Florence's teammate Griffin Colapinto went down to local Tahitian Kauli Vaast.

Following a completed round 3 which decided the quarter-finalists on the men's side, the women's round 3 was called off due to deteriorating conditions and the competition is expected to be off on Tuesday.
