Bangladesh Attorney-General Resigns: Reports

07/08/2024 09:24 PM

MOSCOW, Aug 7 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- Bangladeshi Attorney-General Amin Uddin has sent his resignation letter to the country's President Mohammed Shahabuddin, reported Sputnik on Wednesday, citing the Daily Star.

"I have sent my resignation letter to the president. I mentioned personal difficulties as the reason for resignation in the letter," Uddin told the newspaper.

He was appointed the country's attorney-general in 2020, the report added.

Protests began in Dhaka and across Bangladesh after the announcement of a multi-day "non-cooperation action" with authorities by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on Sunday. Clashes between students, police and government supporters escalated into riots. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid the unrest.

On Monday, media reported that Hasina and her sister had left the official residence in Dhaka and fled to India, which was confirmed by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
