PARIS, Aug 9 (Bernama-dpa) -- Briton Toby Roberts scrambled to a surprise gold in the first ever Olympic men's boulder and lead speed climbing final on Friday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

He was third best with boulder points of 63.1 and also ranked third in lead points (92.1), meaning the the 19-year-old triumphed overall with 155.2.

He became the first British male climber to qualify for an Olympic Games in Paris, after the sport made its debut in Tokyo three years ago, and only took up climbing after seeing it listed as an after-school activity.

Japan's Sorato Anraku was the best boulder climber but suffered on lead and had to settle for silver.

Austrian Jakob Schubert, the 2023 world champion, took bronze just like he did in the combined competition at the last Games –  the only men's sport climbing event held in Tokyo.
