Cambodia Attributes Success In Mine-free Efforts To Global Support Including Malaysia

01/10/2024 03:28 PM

GEORGETOWN, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Cambodia is nearing a historic achievement to be mine-free due to its global partnerships including support from Malaysia, a senior Cambodian official said.

In a statement, Senior Minister Ly Thuch said the Malaysian Business Chamber of Commerce (MBCC) donated RM334,226.55 to fund mine clearance efforts in Kampong Speu province.

"The generous donation was part of a larger initiative to support Cambodia’s vision for becoming mine-free," he said.

Thuch is also Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) first vice-president.

Thuch urged the Malaysian private sector and other international partners to continue their support as Cambodia approaches the final stages of its demining efforts because these companies will continue to benefit from Cambodia’s economy.

According to Wisma Putra, in 2023, Cambodia ranked as Malaysia's ninth largest trading partner in ASEAN.

The Malaysia-Cambodia bilateral trade is worth RM3.02 billion, with exports from Malaysia to Cambodia rising 1.6 per cent from 2022 to reach RM2.35 billion.

Malaysian companies have implemented 162 projects in Cambodia, with investments totalling RM14.4 billion

On Nov 25-29, Cambodia will host the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World to shape a strategic five-year demining plan with 164 countries participating.
