Greek Port Workers Boycott Alleged Transport Of Ammunition To Israel

18/10/2024 07:40 PM

ATHENS, Oct 18 (Bernama-dpa) -- Dozens of employees boycotted the loading of a container in the Greek port of Piraeus on Friday after their union said it contained ammunition destined for Israel, the German news agency (dpa) reported.

The employees did not want to support the "deadly war machine of the State of Israel," said one of the left-wing unions that had called for the protest.

The demonstrators who gathered at the port chanted "freedom for Palestine" and spray-painted "murderers away from the port" on the container.

"We must not allow war material to be transported out of the port of Piraeus to continue the genocide of the Palestinian people," said Markos Bekris, head of the ENEDEP union which represents port employees.

ENEDEP said the protest had ultimately prevented the loading of the container.

According to the Greek television channel ERTNews, the container travelled from North Macedonia to Greece, where it was to be loaded onto a ship bound for the Israeli port city of Haifa.

The unions did not provide any further details about the type of ammunition that the container allegedly held and it was initially impossible to verify the actual contents of the container.
