Russia Accuses Kyiv Of Engaging In Chemical Warfare, Violating Convention

18/10/2024 08:17 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- Russia claims Ukraine has breached the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) by using mass-scale warfare chemical agents against its military and civilians.

The Russian Embassy in Malaysia in a statement said Moscow routinely monitors and documents cases where Ukrainian armed formations are using or planning to use listed chemical agents, riot control agents (RCAs), and other chemicals that do not appear on the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) checklists in the vicinity of the special military operation.

“Russian experts have documented Ukraine’s breaches of CWC provisions, as well as violations of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances,” it said in the statement.

It alleged toxic chemicals used by Kyiv in the war include chlorine, ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and sulfuric acid, and substances listed under CWC schedules 2 (BZ) and 3 (chloropicrin) and the RCAs.

“The Russian Federation will continue to inform the international community about Kyiv’s CWC violations and the actual state of affairs in the SMO (special military operation) zone,” according to the statement.

It said Russia has regularly shared the detailed information with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the UN Security Council, and the UN General Assembly since February 2022.
