PUTRAJAYA, Oct 25 (Bernama) – No Malaysians were involved in or affected by Tropical Typhoon Kristine (Trami) which has brought severe flooding and landslides and displaced hundreds in the Philippines.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said as of Friday, the wind signal for Typhoon Kristine, categorised as a Level Two tropical cyclone, remains active in Metro Manila and regions across Luzon.

The ministry said the typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility later on Friday.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila, is closely monitoring Tropical Typhoon Kristine (Trami), that has brought heavy and intense rains and caused widespread flooding and landslides, resulting in a number of deaths, injuries and the displacement of hundreds of families.

“Thus far, there were no Malaysians reported to be involved in or affected by the typhoon,” the statement read.

The Foreign Ministry advised Malaysians in the affected areas to stay vigilant and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by the local authorities.

Malaysians requiring consular assistance can contact the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila at Salcedo Village, 107 Tordesillas, Makati, 1227 Metro Manila, or reach the embassy by telephone at +63 2 8662 8200 / 0917 864 0761, or through email at mwmanila@kln.gov.my.

“Malaysia extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the Government and people of the Philippines, especially the victims and families affected by the incidents,” read the statement.

The Foreign Ministry said another typhoon, set to be named “Leon”, is currently located 2,500 kilometres away from the Visayas and is projected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility by Sunday (Oct 27).

Xinhua reported that the death toll from Tropical Typhoon Trami that slammed into the Philippines this week has risen to 46, with at least 20 other people still missing, authorities said Friday.

In a report, Office of Civil Defence administrator Ariel Nepomuceno said nine regions across the country have reported deaths related to Trami.
