JAKARTA, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The Indonesian National Police (Polri) have seized drugs worth 31.8 trillion rupiah (about US$2.02 billion) from 2020 to present, potentially saving 262 million people from the dangers of narcotics, according to its chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

He also confirmed that over 264,188 suspects had been arrested in connection with drugs during this period and more than 1.55 trillion rupiah (approximately US$98.7 million) in assets had been confiscated.

“Polri remains committed to taking firm action against drug offenders and dismantling drug networks,” he said in a meeting with Commission III of the People’s Representative Council at the Parliament complex on Monday.

Listyo also outlined a multi-phase strategy to combat drug trafficking, with short-term priorities (one to two years), including strengthening border security, advancing digital transformation, and expanding drug-free villages.

For the medium term (three to five years), he said Polri plans to enhance special drug units, map narcotic trafficking on the dark web, and bolster international cooperation to curb the global drug trade.

Looking ahead to the long term (six to 10 years), Polri’s efforts will include the use of digital forensics, expanding drug-free areas, and establishing research centres dedicated to drug eradication strategies, he added.
