JAKARTA, Dec 17 (dpa) -- A woman was fatally attacked by a crocodile while foraging along the shores in Indonesia's North Sumatra province, an official said on Tuesday.
The victim was found dead on Monday with severe injuries to her arms and legs after authorities in the South Nias district shot and killed the crocodile, local official Kornelius Wau said, reported German news agency (dpa).
"Residents had difficulties extracting the victim from the crocodile's grip," Kornelius said. "They only managed to free her after several hours."
He said the crocodile had been roaming the area for some time and residents had previously reported sightings of the reptile.
Indonesia leads the world in saltwater crocodile attacks, with approximately 1,000 incidents over the past decade resulting in more than 450 fatalities, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Crocodile attacks on humans in Indonesia have been attributed to habitat encroachment and environmental degradation.
