1.CALLS TO END DEATH PENALTY RESUME FOLLOWING CONVICTS’ REPATRIATION -- THE JAKARTA POST

President Prabowo Subianto’s decision to repatriate foreign convicts on death row has reignited calls from human rights advocates for the government to take a bolder stance and abolish capital punishment entirely.

 

2.CELIOS: VAT HIKE COULD INCREASE MONTHLY SPENDING BY $22 FOR MIDDLE CLASS -- JAKARTA GLOBE

The Center of Economic and Law Studies (Celios) estimates that the government’s plan to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate to 12 percent will worsen the economic conditions, especially for lower-middle income groups.

1. CIVIL SERVANT ALLOWANCES TO EASE FINANCIAL WOES - -VIENTIANE TIMES

The Lao government plans to introduce an allowance scheme for civil servants to help them cope with the rising cost of living. The scheme to be implemented next month includes civil servants, soldiers, the police, and retired and disabled employees  

 

2.MODERNISING PUBLIC DELIVERY TO BETTER SERVE PEOPLE - - VIENTIANE TIMES 

Laos launched the “Enhancing Efficiency and Accessibility of Public Services” programme to create an efficient and inclusive public service system. The RM13.4 million (US$3 million) project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development and the government of Ireland.

1.CYBER CRIME LOSSES REACH RM3 BILLION -- VNEXPRESS The National Cybersecurity Association revealed online scams impacted one in every 220 smartphone users in 2024, resulting in losses totalling RM3.4 billion (US$744 million). Common cyber crimes were fraudulent investment schemes, fake prizes and promotion offers, and impersonation of government or organisational officials.

 

2.HANOI AIRPORT ON ALERT AFTER CONGO DISEASE SCARE -- VIETNAM NEWS

The Hanoi Centre for Disease Control is tightening health checks at the Noi Bai International Airport following the outbreak of a respiratory illness in Congo. Authorities aim to detect any cases of infection or suspicion to take timely preventive actions.
