Malaysian Scientist Appointed As Expert To Scientific Advisory Board Of OPCW

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysian chemical weapons scientist Dr Raja Subramaniam has been appointed as an expert to the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), according to the Malaysian Foreign Ministry. 

The ministry, widely known as Wisma Putra, said Raja is among seven experts from the Asian region in the SAB. 

“Dr Raja will commence his term as expert to the SAB from Jan 1,  2025 to Dec 31, 2027,” said Wisma Putra in a statement Tuesday.

The ministry expressed its appreciation to the director-general of the OPCW and the international community for their confidence in Malaysia’s commitment to global efforts in eliminating chemical weapons.

According to Wisma Putra, the SAB comprises of 25 independent experts from OPCW-member states, serving in their personal capacity; providing specialised advice to the OPCW director-general, who is based in The Hague, the Netherlands, on scientific and technological developments relevant to the implementation of the United Nations Chemical Weapons Convention.

The SAB meets once a year, or as and when required by the director-general, the statement added. 

According to Wisma Putra, Raja has over 23 years of specialised expertise in chemical weapons-related matters.

He holds a doctorate in chemical weapons analysis from the National Swedish Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear Defence Research Institute.

He is currently serving his second term as undersecretary of the Malaysian National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention, which operates under the Foreign Ministry, the statement said.
