NEW YORK, Jan 17 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- US President Joe Biden won't enforce a ban on TikTok just a day before he leaves office on Monday, leaving the incoming Donald Trump administration to make the decision, according to a White House official, as reported by Xinhua.
Given the timing of when it goes into effect — over a holiday weekend and a day before the inauguration — it will be up to the next administration to implement," CNN reported on Thursday, citing an anonymous White House official.
In April 2024, Biden enacted a law named Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act that gives TikTok's parent company ByteDance only 270 days to sell TikTok, citing unfounded national security concerns.
If the company fails to comply, the law will require app store operators such as Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their platforms.
The ban is scheduled to take effect on Sunday, one day before US President-elect Trump takes office.
The expectation of going dark with TikTok raised grave concerns amid hundreds of millions of its US users and quite a number of Congressional members.
Trump recently urged the Supreme Court to delay the TikTok ban to allow time for a negotiated solution.
The Supreme Court of the United States is expected to announce its opinions on the fate of TikTok on Friday morning, according to a last-minute addition to its schedule.
"The Court may announce opinions on the homepage beginning at 10 am. The Court will not take the Bench," said a notice by the Supreme Court.
TikTok sued the US government to block the potential ban in May 2024 and the legal fight reached the Supreme Court in December 2024.
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments over the controversial law last Friday.
