Five Dead, Hundreds Impacted By Landslides And Floods Across Indonesia -- BNPB

JAKARTA, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- Five people have died and several others have been injured as a result of landslides and flooding caused by heavy rainfall across Indonesia, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported, as the country enters the final week of January.

According to BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari, emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected regions to assist local communities and continue search-and-rescue efforts.

On Jan 26, a landslide in Mamuju, West Sulawesi, resulted in four fatalities and left at least four others injured after torrential rainfall caused the ground to collapse.

Abdul Muhari noted that search operations were temporarily suspended due to adverse weather and hazardous terrain, which heightened the risk of further landslides.

“Once conditions improved, efforts resumed, including attempts to clear blocked roads,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

A separate landslide in Tasikmalaya, West Java, on the same day, killed one person, severely damaged a house, and left three others at risk of collapse.

Severe flooding in South Kalimantan’s Tapin district on Jan 25 also affected 179 houses, with water levels ranging from five to 20 centimetres, although the waters are now receding.

On Jan 26, heavy rainfall caused flooding in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, affecting 395 families, while in Pasuruan, East Java, the rainfall flooded 393 houses, with water levels ranging from 10 to 40 centimetres.

Flooding in Tulang Bawang, Lampung, caused by river overflow, affected 379 families, inundated 470 hectares of rice fields, and disrupted three schools, Abdul Muhari added.
