Former Singapore Transport Minister Iswaran Placed On Home Detention

SINGAPORE, Feb 7 -- Former Singapore Transport Minister S. Iswaran has been placed on a home detention scheme on Friday, four months after being sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the High Court, local media reported.

Iswaran, 62, was sentenced on Oct 3, 2024, after pleading guilty and being convicted of four charges of accepting valuable items as a public servant and one charge of obstruction of justice. He began serving his sentence on Oct 7, 2024.

In response to queries from The Straits Times (ST), the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) stated that Iswaran has been assessed as suitable for placement on the scheme, as he is considered a low risk of reoffending, has not committed any institutional offences in prison, and has strong family support.

“Iswaran is eligible for the home detention scheme,” a SPS spokesperson said.

SPS explained that eligible prisoners are considered for placement on the home detention scheme after serving at least 14 days or half of their sentence, whichever is later, following any remission, ST reported.

“They are assessed for suitability for the home detention scheme, taking into account various factors such as their conduct, progress, and response to rehabilitation during incarceration,” the spokesperson added.

Iswaran, like all inmates on the home detention scheme, will serve his remaining sentence at his residence under specified conditions, including curfew monitoring via an electronic tag, being gainfully occupied in work, study, or training, and reporting to the SPS for counselling.
