EU Authorises UV Treatment For Insect Powder In Food

BRUSSELS, Feb 9 (Bernama-dpa) -- Starting Monday, UV-treated insect powder, specifically powdered whole larvae of the flour beetle (Tenebrio molitor), will be permitted for use in food across the European Union, reported German news agency (dpa). 

While flour beetles have already been approved as food, the new authorisation covers their UV treatment, intended to enhance the powder’s vitamin D content.

Under the new regulation, only a French company will initially be allowed to market the treated larvae.

Consumer scepticism remains high.

The EU has permitted the use of insects in food for several years, though manufacturers must apply for authorisation. If insects are included as an ingredient, this must be clearly stated on the packaging.

"People in the EU can choose what they eat, and nobody forces them to eat insects or worms," the European Commission stated. 

It also stressed that strict scientific assessments are conducted before such products are approved for the market, ensuring consumer safety.

Despite growing availability, many consumers remain hesitant about eating insects. A representative online survey commissioned by the food and pet food manufacturer Heristo AG found that older respondents, in particular, expressed significant reservations.

Insects are widely recognised as a nutritious, protein-rich food source and are part of traditional diets in many countries. 

Due to their efficient resource use, they are also considered an environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional livestock farming. However, they may pose allergy risks for some individuals.
