INDONESIA

 

1.FREE NUSANTARA LAND FOR FOREIGN EMBASSIES STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION -- JAKARTA GLOBE

Basuki Hadimuljono, Head of the Nusantara Authority, plans to propose providing free land for foreign embassies in East Kalimantan, where Indonesia’s new national capital will be located. The move is intended to attract foreign countries and encourage them to establish their embassies in Nusantara.

 

2.PRABOWO, JOKOWI STAND TOGETHER -- THE JAKARTA GLOBE

President Prabowo Subianto’s repeated praise of Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at the Gerindra Party’s anniversary celebration over the weekend and the government’s recent budget bump for the former president’s legacy project signal Prabowo is not ready to break away from his predecessor just yet.

1.NISSAN TERRA SPORT ENTERS LAO MARKET --  VIENTIANE TIMES Tan Chong Motor (Lao) Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Tan Chong Motor Holdings Berhad (Malaysia), launched the new Nissan Terra Sport. The company also celebrated winning the Nissan Global Award 2024 Programme at the event.

 

2.LAOS-SWITZERLAND SET NEW MOMENTUM TO GROW TIES -- VIENTIANE TIMES Laos and Switzerland strengthened their bilateral relations after marking 60 years of diplomatic ties. Both parties discussed how to further their cooperation in key areas like politics, economics, trade, investment, education, culture and development.

 

MYANMAR

 

1.UPGRADING RAILWAY TRACKS FOR HIGH-SPEED TRAINS -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

The Myanma Railways announced railway tracks and bridges along the Pyinmana-Toungoo section of the Yangon-Mandalay route are being upgraded for high-speed trains to operate. Upgrading is being done within the 59-mile stretch of the Pyinmana-Toungoo railway section.

 

2.MEKONG-LANCHANG CULTURAL EVENT IN MANDALAY -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

The Mekong-Lancang Cultural Activity 2024 will be held in the Mandalay Region from February 22 to 28. It is held under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2024) programme and features an art exhibition. Myanmar, China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam will participate.

1.FAR-RIGHT EXTREMISM : NO LONGER A THREAT FAR AWAY FROM SINGAPORE  -- THE STRAITS TIMES

Far-right extremism is no longer a distant threat. Recent cases show that such ideologies are gaining a foothold in Singapore, mirroring a troubling global trend, and the authorities have warned that this threat is likely to persist.

 

2.VERDICT EXPECTED IN THE TRIAL OF PRITAM SINGH -- CNA

Four months after his trial began, Workers' Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh is set to learn his fate on Monday (Feb 17) as the State Courts deliver their verdict on two charges of lying to parliament.

TWO MPs, DEPUTY MINISTER INJURED AS GIANT LED SCREEN FALLS ON THEM -- THE NATION A large LED screen fell on Deputy Minister of the Interior Sabida Thaiseth and her team during the celebration of “Lord Brahma and the King of the Quail” in Yasothon province, injuring two MPs, one of whom suffered a dislocated cervical spine.

 

2. CHINA JOINS SCAM CRUSADE -- BANGKOK POST China has stepped up efforts to suppress international scam gangs along the Thai-Myanmar border by sending its assistant minister of public security, Liu Zhongyi, to visit the area and seek support to step up the crackdown.
