MANAMA (Bahrain), Feb 19 (Bernama) -- The Grand Imam of Al Azhar Al Sharif, Dr Ahmed Al Tayyeb, has called on Muslim nations to unite and confront contemporary challenges through mutual understanding and cooperation.
Al Tayyeb, who is also Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasised that the Muslim world is facing a genuine crisis, with Muslims being harassed and oppressed in various regions across the world.
He stressed that the only way to address these challenges is through the unity of Muslim nations, regardless of their geographic location or political affiliations.
“We must acknowledge that we are living through a genuine crisis, and that Muslims everywhere are being harassed. Regardless of where they are, there is no way to confront the contemporary challenges except through the unity of Muslim nations,” he said in his remarks at the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, here on Wednesday.
The conference was organised by Al Azhar Al Sharif, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA) in Bahrain, and the Muslim Council of Elders.
It was also attended by the Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of his first official visit to the Gulf country.
Anwar was the only Head of Government invited to give a speech at the conference, which was held under the patronage of Bahrain’s King, King Hamad Isa Al Khalifa.
Elaborating further, Al Tayyeb said there is a need for a collective, actionable plan to improve the conditions of the Muslim world, one that does not exclude any group or party.
The conference is expected to serve as a leading global platform, bringing together prominent scholars, intellectuals, and religious authorities, alongside decision makers and influential figures in the Islamic world.
The aim is to establish constructive dialogue, unify perspectives on key issues facing the Islamic nation, and enhance understanding and solidarity among its diverse intellectual and sectarian components.
The two-day conference, which started on Wednesday, gathered over 400 Islamic scholars, religious leaders, intellectuals, and experts from across the Islamic world under the theme “One Nation, One Shared Destiny”.
