JAKARTA, 24 Feb (Bernama) -- Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail hopes that Malaysians in Indonesia will also play a role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Speaking at a dinner with Malaysian students and diaspora on Monday as part of his three-day working visit here, he emphasised the importance of Malaysia-Indonesia relations and outlined his agenda, including meetings with Indonesian leaders to discuss immigration policies, border security, and detainee management.

He stated that his visit, together with the delegation, was focused on strengthening bilateral ties and tackling key current issues of mutual priority for both nations.

He noted that this visit builds on the official visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to Malaysia in January.

“As neighbouring nations with shared roots, we will continue to strengthen our ties for the benefit of the people of both countries," he said.

Saifuddin Nasution also provided updates on Malaysia's domestic affairs, including reforms to the Peaceful Assembly Act, as well as Malaysia's preparations and priorities as ASEAN Chair.

He stated that the government is also working to strengthen the economy to achieve social justice, safeguard the welfare of the people, and enhance societal well-being.

In addition, priority is also given to effective administration and governance, with the Madani framework serving as the main guiding principle.

Also present were Home Ministry Secretary-General, Datuk Awang Alik Jeman, Selangor Police Chief, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Director-General, Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, and Prisons Department Commissioner General, Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Razak.

Earlier, Saifuddin Nasution held a meeting with the Deputy Speaker of Indonesia’s People's Consultative Assembly, Dr Hidayat Nur Wahid, to discuss bilateral matters and humanitarian issues.

They also touched on the efforts for Gaza’s reconstruction, in which Malaysia plays a key role alongside Japan.
