Over 120,000 People Affected By Floods In Indonesia

JAKARTA, March 5 (Bernama) -- A total of 124,816 people have been affected by the ongoing floods in Indonesia’s Jabodetabek metropolitan area, which includes Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, as well as parts of Banten province.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reports that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts, such as evacuations, food distribution, and emergency services.

BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said that as of 7 pm on Tuesday, the floods have impacted 13,704 families, or approximately 51,320 people, across 18 villages in 10 sub-districts in Bekasi Regency.

“Affected areas include Bojongmangu, North Cikarang, East Cikarang, and others, where water levels continue to fail to recede,” he said in a statement.

He noted that Bekasi and Banten Province are the most affected followed by Jakarta and Depok.

To mitigate the risk of further flooding, BNPB has scheduled a weather modification operation from March 4 to 8 in the upstream area of Puncak Bogor.

The operation aims to reduce rainfall intensity, which is the primary cause of floods that affect lower-lying regions.

“This effort seeks to divert rainfall from flood-prone areas to minimise further damage,” said Abdul Muhari, adding that authorities are continuing to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts to support those affected.
