10/03/2025 06:03 PM

TOKYO, March 10 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Japan reaffirmed on Monday its commitment to working closely with Canada to uphold peace in the Indo-Pacific and maintain unity within the Group of Seven (G7) as former central banker Mark Carney prepares to take office as Canada’s next prime minister.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi emphasised the importance of strengthening ties with Canada, highlighting their shared commitment to fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, as well as their strategic interests, Kyodo news agency reported.

Canada assumes the G7 presidency this year amid growing concerns over the group's cohesion following the return of United States (US) President Donald Trump.

"We will cooperate with Canada, an important strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific, to maintain and strengthen regional and global peace and stability while ensuring the G7 remains united," Hayashi said at a regular press briefing.

On Sunday, Canada’s governing Liberal Party elected Carney as its new leader, paving the way for him to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has announced his decision to step down.
