Mexico to Continue Negotiations With US on Tariff Issues, Says President

23/05/2025 04:10 PM

MEXICO CITY, May 23 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- After a phone conversation with her US counterpart, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum decided Thursday to continue negotiating the tariff issue concerning the steel, aluminium and automotive sectors, Xinhua reported.

At her daily press conference, Sheinbaum said while the conversation did not focus on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which will be reviewed in 2026, it did address issues in key sectors such as the automotive industry, as well as steel and aluminium exports.

"In principle, we continue to talk about trade and tariffs. Remember that we, in the case of the automotive (sector), have a very preferential situation for Mexico, although we would still like more ... and we continue working on steel and aluminium," she said.

It had been agreed that a high-level meeting on trade attended by members of both governments, including Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, will be held on Friday, she added.
