S Korea’s Presidential Candidates to Debate Diplomacy, Political Reform in Final Showdown

27/05/2025 12:03 PM

SEOUL, May 27 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- South Korea’s four presidential candidates are set to face off in their final televised debate on Tuesday, just one week ahead of the election, Yonhap news agency reported.

Hosted by the National Election Commission, the debate will begin at 8 pm local time and focus on key issues including political polarisation, constitutional reform and foreign, and security policy.

With the campaign entering its final stretch, recent polls show Democratic Party (DP) candidate Lee Jae Myung maintaining a lead, though the gap with People Power Party (PPP) contender Kim Moon Soo has narrowed.

Lee Jun Seok of the minor New Reform Party (NRP), who has recently gained double-digit support in opinion polls, has ruled out a merger with Kim, despite ongoing speculation.

The three leading candidates, along with Kwon Young Kook of the minor Democratic Labour Party, will present their positions on how to address deepening political divisions and share their core policy pledges.

As the current front-runner, Lee Jae Myung is expected to defend his reform agenda, which includes limiting the president’s veto powers and introducing a four-year, two-term presidency.

On foreign policy, Lee is likely to promote his "pragmatic diplomacy" approach, focused on national interest.

Kim, meanwhile, is expected to support reducing presidential powers but may propose a shortened three-year term for the next president.
