JAKARTA, May 28 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called on Israel to recognise the sovereignty of Palestine as an independent state, stating that such a move would pave the way for Indonesia to establish formal diplomatic relations with Israel.
He reaffirmed Indonesia’s consistent support for a two-state solution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict.
"Indonesia has made it clear that once a Palestinian state is recognised by Israel, we are prepared to recognise Israel and open diplomatic relations.
"We are also ready to contribute peacekeeping forces to the region," he said, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Secretariat.
Prabowo made the remarks during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Wednesday. Macron is in Indonesia for a three-day visit ending Thursday.
President Prabowo has used various international forums to express Indonesia’s firm belief that the two-state solution is the only path toward lasting peace in the Middle East.
He also expressed appreciation for France’s active role in advocating for justice and independence for the Palestinian people, which aligns with Indonesia’s vision of ending violence and expanding humanitarian access in Gaza.
Indonesia’s approach to resolving the Israeli Palestinian conflict is rooted in its 1945 Constitution, which mandates the country to contribute to global peace based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice, the statement noted.
Media reports have stated that France and Saudi Arabia will jointly chair the “High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution” in New York next month.
