ST. PETERSBURG (Russia), June 20 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has been re-elected into the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) executive board.

The decision was made during OANA's 19th General Assembly here, which was hosted by Russia's TASS agency.

More than a hundred representatives of news agencies from more than 30 countries attended the assembly and related events.

Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) was represented by Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Russia's state-run TASS was elected as the chair of OANA for the next three years, taking over from IRNA (Iran).

It's Director General  Andrey Kondrashov was elected President while his deputy Mikhail Gusman takes over the General Secretary post.

The President of China’s Xinhua news agency, Fu Hua, IRNA’s CEO Hossein Jaberi-Ansari, South Korea’s Yonhap CEO Hwang Dae Il, Turkiye’s Anadolu CEO Serdar Karagoz, and Azerbaijan’s Azertac Chairman Vugar Aliyev will serve as OANA vice presidents.

The new executive board will also consist of ANTARA, Qatar News Agency, Bahrain News Agency, Vietnam News Agency and Japan's Kyodo.

Azertac will organise the next Oana General Assembly in Azerbaijan in 2028.

OANA was established in 1961 on the initiative of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) to facilitate direct and free news exchange among news agencies in a region that accounts for over half of the world’s population.

OANA currently has 41 member news agencies from 33 countries, with 13 agencies serving the executive board.
