South Korea's National Assembly Approves PM Nominee Kim Min Seok

03/07/2025 05:26 PM

SEOUL, July 3 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- South Korea's National Assembly on Thursday approved Kim Min Seok as prime minister, despite a boycott by the main opposition People Power Party (PPP).

According to Yonhap news agency, the confirmation motion passed 173-3, with three invalid ballots.

Only ruling Democratic Party (DP) and minor party lawmakers took part.

Kim, a four-term DP lawmaker, was nominated by President Lee Jae Myung 29 days ago.

After the vote, Kim pledged to “uphold the will of the people” and make overcoming the economic crisis his top priority.

The PPP questioned Kim’s qualifications, citing discrepancies in his reported wealth, allegations over his son's college admission, and his studies at China's Tsinghua University.

The DP had vowed to push ahead with the vote regardless of opposition.

In South Korea, the prime minister is the only Cabinet post requiring parliamentary approval.
