WASHINGTON, Aug 9 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Armenia and Azerbaijan on Friday signed a trilateral peace “roadmap” with the United States (US) that US President Donald Trump said would end decades of conflict, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
“With this accord, we’ve finally succeeded in making peace,” Trump told reporters in the State Dining Room, flanked by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
He said the agreement commits both nations to end all fighting, open commerce, travel and diplomatic relations, and respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A key component is the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), connecting mainland Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through Armenian territory under an exclusive partnership with the US for up to 99 years.
Trump said American companies were keen to develop the corridor, bringing major infrastructure projects and economic benefits to all three nations. He also announced the lifting of US defence cooperation restrictions with Azerbaijan.
Aliyev hailed the “historic day,” saying it marked peace in the Caucasus and opportunities for reconciliation.
Pashinyan said the deal ushered in a “new era” based on full respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, with President Trump’s role as witness giving confidence in a future of peace, security and cooperation.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the agreement, saying it would end decades of conflict and unlock the South Caucasus region’s economic potential.
The White House described the TRIPP as a “multimodal transit area” linking Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan via Armenian territory, similar to past proposals such as the Zangezur Corridor.
Negotiations on the route’s operator will begin next week, with nine potential bidders, including three US firms. Working groups will be set up immediately to finalise details.
The leaders also signed a joint letter requesting the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, which has mediated the conflict since the late 1980s.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought several wars, most recently in 2023 when Azerbaijan reclaimed Karabakh.
