LAOS 

 

1.JAPAN ASSISTS LAO UPGRADE ROADS -- VIENTIANE TIMES 

Japan has donated road and bridge maintenance equipment worth RM42 million (US$10 million)  to Laos. The equipment was provided under the 2023 socio-economic development project to improve the quality of roads across Laos.

 

2.NGOY DISTRICT TO BE MAJOR TOURIST SPOT -- VIENTIANE TIMES

The Ngoy district, located in the north of Luang Prabang province, is positioning itself as a major tourist attraction. It will upgrade infrastructure, facilities and accommodation according to ASEAN green hotel standards to be more environmentally friendly. 

 

 

MYANMAR

 

1.MODERNISING YANGON CIRCULAR RAILWAY -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

The Yangon Circular Railway upgrading works with new stations will be completed this year. Construction of new stations is underway as part of the city’s railway modernisation project, which commenced in 2022.

 

2.MMPO TO OVERSEE FILMING, CENSORSHIP -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

Myanmar Motion Pictures Organisation (MMPO) will grant permission for filming and censor approval for movies, music videos and documentaries starting October 1. The organisation has the authority, under the 1996 Myanmar Motion Pictures Law, to grant permissions. 

 

 

PHILIPPINES

 

1.'GORIO' UNLIKELY TO AFFECT PH; 'HABAGAT' TO BRING RAINS -- PHILIPPINE NEWS AGENCY

Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Podul has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and was given the local name, Gorio, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday.

The trial of former Hyflux CEO Olivia Lum and five others begins on Monday (Aug 11) over the company's failure to disclose information about the Tuaspring integrated water and power project.

1. CANNABIS RECLASSIFICATION BOOSTS TOURISM, SAY TOURISM ASSOCIATIONS -- THE NATION

Tourism operators believe the reclassification of cannabis as a narcotic will yield more benefits than drawbacks, particularly in attracting family travellers.  

2. GOVT EXTOLS ITS RELIEF PACKAGE FOR LOCALS -- BANGKOK POST

The government has rolled out a series of measures to help residents displaced by the border tensions with Cambodia, including a two-month suspension of electricity and water fees.

 

 

VIETNAM

 

1.MODERN TREATMENT FOR BLINDNESS, EYE DISEASES -- VIETNAMPLUS

Ophthalmologists discussed the latest medical techniques to prevent blindness and the treatment of eye diseases at the 2025 Ophthalmology Conference in Hanoi on August 8-9. Cataracts remain the main cause of blindness in Vietnam. 

 

2.VIETNAMESE DURIANS MAKE IT TO ASEAN EXPO -- VIETNAMPLUS

Vietnam showcased durians at the maiden ASEAN–China Durian Festival held in Beijing on August 9. Vietnamese featured fresh durian, durian ice cream, durian cakes and fruits such as dragon fruit and passion fruit.
